Bloomsburg Lacrosse Falls to Sixth-Ranked Mercyhurst

ERIE-The Bloomsburg University lacrosse team fell to sixth-ranked Mercyhurst on Sunday by a score of 15-14 in two overtimes.
The Huskies gave up a quick goal to open the game, then came back with three straight with Sam Alexander (Willow Grove/Upper Moreland) scoring twice and Tia Mazzie (Barto/Boyertown) once. Later, with the Huskies leading 4-2, the Lakers scored four straight times to grab a 6-4 lead with 8:07 to go in the period. The Huskies, though, closed out the half with goals from Allie Kakareka (Royersford/Spring-Ford) and Mazzie to send the game to halftime tied at 6-6.
Mercyhurst started the second half with two goals to lead 8-6. The Huskies came back and scored seven of the next nine goals over an 18-minute stretch to lead 13-10 with seven minutes to play. Kelsey Quigley (Lansdale/Methacton) and Alexander both scored twice for the Huskies in the rally.
However, the Lakers finished with the final three goals of the half, including the game-tying goal with 29 seconds to play to force overtime. In the first three-minute session of overtime, Kim Springman (Downingtown/Bishop Shanahan) scored to put the Huskies up 14-13. But, Mercyhurst scored with 35 seconds go to knot the score at 14-14 going to the second, three-minute period. In the second, three-minute session there was no scoring forcing a sudden-death overtime.
In the sudden-death, Bloomsburg's Alexander took the first shot of the period just about a minute into play, but her shot was stopped by Laker goalie Maeve McGoff. Then with 1:26 left in the frame Mercyhurst's Kimberly Masterton scored the gamewinner.
For Bloomsburg, now 6-2, Alexander finished with four goals, while Mazzie added three and Springman two. Springman also led the Huskies with four assists. Mercyhurst, 8-0, got eight goals from Breanna Haggerty.
Bloomsburg will play at East Stroudsburg on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
